Biblical Meaning

The words “Open my eyes, Lord” are drawn from Psalm 119:18: “Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law” (NIV). The shirt shortens the line into a prayer; it isn’t the full verse. The psalmist is talking about God’s Word, and the request is humble on purpose. He doesn’t ask for more information. He asks for sight — the ability to see what’s already there, because the wonder in Scripture isn’t missing, we are just slow to notice it.

The same prayer shows up elsewhere in the Bible. Elisha prayed it for his frightened servant in 2 Kings 6, and the young man looked up to see the hills full of horses and chariots of fire that had been there all along. That’s the heart of it. God’s work, His Word and His care are present whether we perceive them or not. Asking Him to open our eyes is asking to live awake.
